Why They Ruined Their Wedding

why they ruined
their wedding

Saving a few hundred dollars can cost you more than you imagine

99% of Couples wish they’d invested more in their wedding entertainment. That means that every wedding website, coordinator, and bridal magazine isn’t setting you up for success if they’re budgeting more for things that don’t matter to you as much as 80% of your reception.

We don’t have
it in the budget

If your budget is downplaying the impact the vendor in charge of 80% of your event will be, you might want to reconsider your budget.

my friend is doing it

We get calls every week from panicked couples whose ‘Friend’ is leaving them in the lurch. Additionally, most DJs aren’t wedding DJs, and it’s a totally different skill set than playing tech house for drink tickets or hyping up a club or doing kids parties.

we’re having a band

65% of couples who chose a band wish they’d gotten a DJ. While a band may be the right fit for your event, bear in mind that many venues require you to hire a DJ/MC to act as the master of ceremonies since bands are notoriously bad at this. If you’re spending $12,000 on a band, spend the extra money and get a great MC, it’s a much bigger value than it seems.

it’s not that important

If 80% of your event isn’t that important then you’re probably going to be one of the thousands of wedding couples every month who wish they’d done it different. 99% of couples wish they’d invested more in their entertainment.

we have other priorities

This is absolutely valid, the questions is WHERE on your list of priorities your DJ is. If your priority is food, then by all means serve an 8 course meal and put your resources there. If you’re going to have dinner for 45 minutes to an hour, but your event is 5 hours long, you might want to re-prioritize your DJ budget.

we’re going to set up a speaker (ipod/spotify)

There are some significant consequences to this. The first is that you’re losing your Master of Ceremonies and event director. The 2nd is the every song is mastered differently, which means SOMEONE is going to have to be back there making sure the music isn’t too loud or too soft the entire time, or skipping songs that don’t fit the vibe anymore. Don’t make your cousin do it.

It’s a Small Wedding / No dancing

This is going to sound counter-intuitive, but at that point you should be investing MORE into your DJ. Smaller events and events where guests aren’t going to be entertained by dancing require MORE engagement and interaction from your DJ, otherwise everyone is essentially sitting in a well-appointed elevator they can’t get out of while background music plays. If you’re not planning on having dancing, there are lots of fun ways a professional DJ/MC can engage and entertain your guests appropriately.

our venue includes it

Congratulations! You’re about to get a DJ who’s also the owner’s son, or perhaps a DJ who’s so cheap the venue is making a small fortune off of what they’re charging you for it. Caveat Emptor. While this isn’t always the case, some venues have professionals on their preferred vendor lists who can do a great job for your event, but do your due-diligence and make sure you’re getting the right fit. Every wedding is different, and anyone who tells you otherwise isn’t a true professional.

We were on a tight budget so we hired our ‘friend’ to do it. Right before the wedding he backed out on us, saying he wasn’t ‘comfortable’ doing it. We had two days to get another DJ and I was so stressed. He never refunded the money we gave him and we haven’t seen him since. My advice is simple – hire the right person first.
